When her baby sister came along and needed to move into the nursery, it was time for big sister, Carina, to get a special big girl room. To ease the transition, we wanted to make her new room a place that could bring her imagination to life. Areas for toy and clothing storage make this cozy garden bedroom a delight both aesthetically and functionally.

Design Challenges + Solutions

The goal was to convert the small room into a space for sleep and play that was uniquely Carina’s. Because the room is a fairly long and narrow rectangular shape, we were challenged to fit book, toy storage, and a play area in with the bed.

We landed on a floor plan that allowed the beautiful arched window to become an accent and focal point in the room with floor-to-ceiling shelving for toys and books and a fun bench seat for reading and daydreaming. We used a daybed under the side window to open up the walking/playing area, which doubles as a comfortable place to sit and sleep. Since we wanted the floor space open for play, we decided to eliminate a dresser in the bedroom area. Instead, we converted the current closet with a standard high shelf above a clothing rod into a more useful and beautiful place for all of Carina’s clothing and accessories with built-in shelving and drawers.

Garden Bedroom Design Development

We presented concepts with floor plans, renderings and drawings to show our clients the vision for the new layout.

Once our clients agreed on the floor plan and the custom built-ins, it was time to dig into the colors, textures, and design elements. This client has a classy, playful aesthetic with a touch of bohemian style, so we wanted to bring all of this into her daughter’s new room as well. The hydrangea wallpaper became the springboard for the whole garden bedroom design. With its blush, sage and metallic accents, we used it to tie everything together with classic style. The natural elements in the cane and wood daybed, mirror and hemp light fixture added warmth and texture. The pink ceilings and closet were balanced with the beautiful sage green bunny chairs and side table, which we had painted to perfectly coordinate with the chairs and wallpaper. We used the table and bunny chairs to create a playful sculptural element in the space. This really was such a fun room to put together!

The bedding blends a fluffy Belgian flax linen blush comforter and subtle plaid sheets with a ruffle detail. A mix of different accent pillows in different shapes, sizes and colors create an eclectic, playful mix of patterns and colors and soften up the back and sides of the daybed for sitting.

Garden bedroom bedding

We gathered the wallpaper, bedding, paint, and hardware samples to present the design plan to our clients. We used 3D renderings to show them how it would all come together and they LOVED everything!

Bringing the Garden Bedroom to Life

It was time to get to work on implementing the design and see the room come alive! We worked with a custom furniture maker to create the built-ins according to our designs, purchased the furnishings and decor, created custom window treatments, and coordinated the installation with various trades people.

Then the final step was styling. We wanted to bring in elements that spoke to the garden bedroom theme both in books and items to play with. We shopped online and at our favorite local children’s shop, Little Wave’s Kids.

After many years of meeting with kitchen remodel experts, our clients were still unable to find a new layout worthy of their large Rumson family home. That’s when Viscon Builders referred them to us for a new perspective. It’s hard to put into words what an amazing design transformation took place in the kitchen (and beyond). So instead we’re going to let the images do most of the talking.

Before the Kitchen Remodel

Sometimes to solve a problem you have to look beyond what is right in front of you. Though we were brought in to advise on a new kitchen layout, we saw the full potential when we looked at all the spaces connected to the kitchen. By redesigning the mudroom and family room entrances we completely opened up the possibilities.

We asked ourselves a few questions as we began brainstorming.

  • What might the kitchen look like if we opened up the wall into the family room?
  • Could we add more seating for social gatherings with friends and family?
  • What if we move the entrance into the kitchen from the mudroom?

Yes, yes, and yes! We delivered multiple layout options, but named our favorite one the Wild Card. Luckily our clients were able to see the vision presented in our 3D rendering and trusted us to go WILD

Before and After Floor Plan

Before Kitchen Remodel Floor Plan

After RemodelThe biggest change we made was the location of the side entrance to the home to improve the overall flow of the 1st floor of the home. By adding a small addition to the room on the far left, we were able to eliminate the entrance into the kitchen from the middle of the room. We then relocated the side entrance to the new mudroom. This created a spacious mudroom and freed up more space in the kitchen for large, continuous stretches of countertops, as well as a charming eat-in banquet in the bay window. The result is just as beautiful as it is functional!

After the Kitchen Remodel…And Beyond

In the end, this project was a full remodel, design and styling project for the Mudroom and Bathroom, Kitchen, Butlers Pantry, Family Room, Upstairs Guest Bathroom, and Screened-In Porch. We customized many key areas of the house in a perfect marriage of form and function. Things like a dog friendly mudroom equipped with an automatic door and sleeping area built into the cabinets, custom banquette and table to maximize seating in kitchen, a reconfigured back staircase, and so much more. Keep your eyes peeled for a separate blog post getting into some of the details and process behind our thinking. For now enjoy the amazing transformation.

An outdoor renovation can completely change the appearance and functionality of your home. When you see this transformation, which included a screened in outdoor dining and living area, open patio with fire pit, and new exterior siding, you won’t be able to take your eyes off of it.

Before

Previously, if you strolled past this two story home, it would blend in with the surroundings. As other homes in the area began to update their exterior, it was clear that this home needed an update and a change that would make it stand out. Not to mention, this home had seen a few additions through the years, and it was time to bring it all together with a new, cohesive look.

Before porch

future outdoor dining and living space

Oftentimes, it’s difficult for homeowners to visualize design changes to a home with just color swatches and descriptions. By using a photoshop mock-up of the home’s exterior, we were able to help the client envision this dramatic color change. In addition, the images were used to communicate design decisions with the contractor and client to ensure everyone was on the same page and that the work was completed correctly.

We knew we wanted a bold color change to really make an impact, so we started by mocking up the home’s exterior in some bold blue hues. We selected a deep blue James Hardie siding color and updated the windows and trim with crisp, white Azek. To maximize the home’s curb appeal, we made a few changes that really brought the exterior remodel to the next level. We replaced the porch railing, rebuilt the stairs, and designed a new modern porch skirt for this lovely young family.

outdoor porch
We found inspiration in the fond memories and southern charm of the enclosed porches from our client’s childhood home in North Carolina. We felt it was the perfect opportunity to extend their outdoor dining and living space on their existing deck. With two young kids, they knew they wanted it to be multifunctional, so we created two sitting zones for inside and outside activities.

Inside the screened porch, which is adjacent to their interior family room and kitchen, the family could enjoy a three season hangout as well as outdoor dining away from pesky mosquitoes. Comfort was maximized with vaulted ceilings and a cool ceiling fan for those hot NJ days. We also included an outdoor sofa and coffee table for reading, games and entertaining, a small outdoor credenza for serving drinks and storing entertaining must-haves, and a cozy round dining table and bistro chairs for conversation and outdoor dining. In addition, new outdoor lighting, a soft weather resistant rug and throw pillows added just the right touch to make the space both functional and comfortable for family activities.

In the open air area of the porch, we worked with the floor plan to include the homeowners must have egg chair as well as a fire pit table, sofa and barbecue grill. Now, they can barbecue, sip hot chocolate (or cocktails) and cozy up by the new fire table on cooler days.

After

This renovation has transformed how this young family uses and entertains in their outdoor space. Now, they spend most of their time at home relaxing on the porch and indulging in some outdoor dining even in the Fall and Spring.

When we first met our lovely clients for this project they had just purchased their new home in the beautiful oceanside town of Atlantic Highlands, NJ. They were in love with the scenery and natural setting. As avid bicyclists and travelers, they envisioned their new home being transformed into a mid-century modern family retreat complete with a modern dining and entertaining space.

When we saw the property in person, we could see that this place was unique. Being poised on a hilltop, through the trees you could see the Hudson Bay and glimpses of the New York City skyline. The dining room had ample windows showcasing the view. However, some of the finishes and details in the space were well worn and loved by the previous owners, and were in need of an update.

They came to us wanting help with furniture and space planning for the large space. They hoped to do more–like refinishing the fireplace and flooring–as time went on. After meeting our clients and walking the space, we could immediately envision this space as something really magical. It just needed new floors, fireplace, staircase, ceiling beams, lighting, a couple new doors, and some paint.

To help our clients see the possibilities, we presented 3D renderings and design plans and explained that hiring a designer and only letting us do half the job would be like getting half your teeth whitened. It won’t meet your expectations and you won’t be happy in the end. The clients loved our plans and we got the green light to move forward!

Modern Dining RenderingEntry Design

We started working on the staircase designs by providing inspiration images of some different options, we then mocked up the client’s selection using Photoshop so they could envision how their staircase would look in this style. For the entry we also sourced new closet and entry doors. This allowed us to begin introducing the more modern color palette, bringing the outdoors in.

The floors were un-level since the house had an addition and the original structure dates back to the early 1900s. The carpeting was concealing some of the height changes. By ripping up the rug and having the contractors level out the subfloor, they were able to lay the new wood flooring down and create a more level space. We worked with the flooring company to select the white oak flooring and to get the perfect stain mixture to match up with the red oak stairs.

Creating a Modern Dining Room

For the dining table, they wanted a space where they could have family come and stay and congregate around a large modern dining table. In looking for a new table, we weren’t finding anything in their style that fit the dimensions of the area. So with their approval, we drew up some designs and had a custom dining table made just for them. It turned out to be absolutely perfect and is framed out so beautifully by all the windows in the space.

The Fireplace

The fireplace was a facade over the original fireplace from the early 1900s and the sides were not fully trimmed out and covered so we decided to make this have a more minimalist mid-mod look by using a hand crafted brick tile that extended from floor to ceiling. This strong vertical element also aimed to make the ceilings in this area of the space seem higher since they were lower than in the dining room.

The lighting in this space was also a key element. When we first met the clients, there were no recessed lights and they were just using lamps to light this large open space. We added a number of high hats, as well as wall sconces, and chandeliers to fill the space with light on multiple levels and highlight the new layout and furnishings.

Highlighting the Natural Trim

Because they wanted to keep the trim around the windows the original color, we decided to suggest adding a couple beams in a similar color to make the vaulted ceiling in this area more of a focal point and to repeat the same wood toned framing from the windows. The result has such a cozy A-frame retreat in the mountains feel. The final chef’s kiss was styling it to bring in some of their own personal items mixed with neutral modern sculptural pieces and repeating the warm wood textures.

This was such a fun project and we loved every minute of working with these clients. We hope you enjoy this transformation as well. Click here to view all the pictures from the project. Feel free to leave a comment or send us an email.

A transformation a year in the making. With COVID delays on the rise, this little living room project saw many setbacks, but we persevered and created a truly beautiful modern coastal living space. And it was well worth the wait.

This design challenge was to create more storage in the awkward empty spaces, update the bar cabinets and “matchy-matchy” granite, and make the space feel more modern and family friendly. We transformed this space into a cozy, modern family room with a sleek built-out fireplace that became the focal point of the room with new built-in storage. On the side we also created a striking blue bar with more countertop space, and little design details like custom mesh grille inserts that took this revamp to the next level.

The Before

The client brought us in because she wanted a more modern and casual style in her open floor plan family room. It is also the main hangout hub for this family of four, so more storage was a must. In addition to closed door storage, she also loves to display family photos and heirlooms and needed more open shelving.

We immediately set our sights on the small, lack-luster, dated fireplace surround and wanted to create something with more dimension and impact. Because of the position of the fireplace between the windows, the wall space was unequal. We focused on creating built-ins and shelving that would help to make the room feel cozy and balanced. The sofas were staying, but mostly everything else was up for discussion. (Just what we like to hear 😀 )

Over in the corner, the grownups love to entertain at the bar. However, the space wasn’t functioning for them and the cabinetry just wasn’t their style. With the kitchen nearby, the wet bar wasn’t giving them what they needed: countertops, refrigeration and storage. In addition, they wanted to bring in coastal style with some blues which inspired us to create something with a modern nautical vibe.

bar before

For this project we provided design boards with the inspiration images, colors, textures, and furniture and accessory selections we wanted to add to the space. When the homeowners agreed on the direction for the project, we worked with the contractors and craftsmen to create plans for the new fireplace and built-ins. Using these plans, the contractors got started bringing them to life.

How We Did It

We worked with HR Design & Build to build out the fireplace, add in the custom built-in shelving, and and put in all new cabinetry in the bar. Here’s a peak of some of the process below.

For the fireplace, we had them build out the surround to add dimension and provide more of a ledge on the fireplace for displaying decor. We also brought the fireplace out wider to create more drama and allow for the homeowners to add a much larger television above. This was a must have for the client’s husband.

fireplace before
fireplace progress

To get the look we wanted on the surface of the fireplace, we had a plaster artisan come in to add a custom designed finish to the fireplace reminiscent of limestone.

The handcrafted finish on this still makes our heart skip a beat!

The After

Reveal day is always our favorite part. We shopped and styled to finish this project with all the details our client was looking for to make a modern coastal living space for her family.

We added a variety of colors and textures as well as artwork and greenery to bring life to the space and create a welcoming environment for their family and guests. We also made sure to add some of the client’s prized family heirlooms and some fun family photos to make the space feel personalized.

Fireplace After

The view from the kitchen is now a breath of fresh air. It’s light and airy, yet warm and cozy with a new rug, accent pillows, a warm oak mantle, new hearth, and floating shelves to help create balance.

Living Room After

From the bar, the seating area and TV are in prime view. Little hints of that gorgeous blue are repeated around the room to tie everything together.

From the backyard entry, the space is modern yet inviting with the fireplace and striking blue bar setting the stage for good times with family and friends.

Built In Shelves
Bar After

It’s all in the subtle details. Adding this custom woven wire grille to the upper cabinets really was one of our favorite touches on the bar. The brass balanced out the cool color of the bar and added the warmth the space needed. We see this little nook being used for serving cookies and hot chocolate by the fire to fancy holiday cocktails gatherings.

We’re excited to finally show you a little family friendly design update we did for a client in Holmdel, NJ last year. This client had moved into their starter home the week before baby #1 and then recently welcomed baby #2 to the family. Life (and how to design around it) was a little different than before, so they called us to help them make it beautiful and functional. The front living room and dining room are an open concept and the first thing you see when you walk in the house. Since budget was a consideration, we started with these two rooms.

The Living Room

In the living room we worked with the clients existing couches and added all the accessories to make the space cozy and bright. Round tables and a giant ottoman make for a stylish, family friendly update. Katy painted the abstract watercolor above the small couch to bring in the fresh hues used throughout the two rooms. Crisp white curtains and a distressed blue rug helped to complete the room.

Family friendly living room

Since these two rooms are so closely connected we selected a bookcase that could be used for storing kids toys, family photos, and entertaining accessories.

The Dining Room

With a tight walking space to pass through to the family room at the back of the house, we opted to move the table toward the wall and give the kids a bench seat. For the most impact, we love mixing highs and lows like the chandelier and wishbone chairs with the transitional table. Elissa photographed the kids at Sandy Hook Beach and then printed it large scale for a stunning dining room feature wall.
